RD Tree Service: Firewood Guide

How Much Firewood Do I Need?
There is no reliable way to determine the amount of firewood you will need for the next winter season. However, guidelines do exist. In 1998, New Jersey homeowners who heated their homes primarily with wood burned almost 5 cords; those who burned wood as a supplement to other home heating systems used just over 2 cords; and those who burned firewood for pleasure only used less than half a cord.

REMEMBER: The earlier in the season you order your firewood, the lower your prices will be!

Our Cords of Wood

1 cord of firewood is 4 feet high, 16 feet long, and one length wide. Each individual firewood length is 16 to 18 inches long. Our firewood is a mixture of hardwoods like oak, hickory, maple, ash, etc.

When To Think About Buying

Firewood needs at least 6 months to season properly, so early to late spring is a good time frame to buy your wood supplies for more than one reason. First and foremost, prices are generally lower then, and supplies are steady. Second, any insects living in the wood will still be dormant from the recent cold and will likely die before Fall. Finally, it ensures that you have what you need when the time comes.

Try to buy only what you will use in a single cold season. You can carry over wood into a second year, but it will give off more smoke than properly seasoned firewood and is more likely to harbor insects as it decays.
